Liberty and Death? (Psalm 2:3)

In working through Psalm 2 the next section is something easy to overlook as it seems almost insignificant when compared to the surrounding verses. Yet, when I start meditating on it and consult my brothers and sisters in Christ and consider it in the light of the rest of the word it is a topic that so often occurs in the Scripture it is hard to take in. This is a tree in a forest and it is a critical tree not to miss:

Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
(Psa 2:3)

In the context of this Psalm this action represents the conspiracy, this is what the enemy is trying to get accomplished. This is Satan’s, and his followers, end-game. And he’s been doing it from the start. He lured Eve into making her way higher than God’s way in her heart and Adam stood beside passively until it was his turn to fall. Satan convinced them to become the center of their own existence, to save their lives for themselves.

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
(Gen 3:5)

ye shall be H1961 (Strongs)
A primitive root (compare H1933); to exist, that is, be or become, come to pass (always emphatic, and not a mere copula or auxiliary): – beacon, X altogether, be (-come, accomplished, committed, like), break, cause, come (to pass), continue, do, faint, fall, + follow, happen, X have, last, pertain, quit (one-) self, require, X use.

Satan was up front with them, he told them that they would exist apart from God, they would be able to break out of God’s rules, out of His boundaries, out of His restraints. They became free from God. Instead of abiding they chose separation and death, they chose self. Separation from God wasn’t a byproduct of the fall, it was the GOAL.

(Side note: In this we can also reflect on the institution of the Tabernacle and the Temple as a means by which men could approach a separated/holy God, a pattern under the covenant of the Law being carried out by the Spirit in His Body) *more on this in the future

So where can we look to find a description of what the bands and the cords are?  Deuteronomy looks like a good place:

In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it. I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
(Deu 30:16-20)

Meditate on that for a moment, prayerfully consider it, what is God saying to you right now?

He is our life! He commands us to choose life, to choose Him. To walk in His ways, by His commandments, His judgments, not our own. He tells us to obey His voice and to cling to Him. Those are His bands, His cords, His yoke.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
(Mat 11:28-30)

So back to Psalm 2, the enemy is speaking to us also. What are “they”  saying? Break free from Him, don’t seek His grace, don’t be empowered by His Holy Spirit, certainly don’t hear His voice. “They” are saying: “Your opinion is all that matters and you have an absolute right to it, don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. Fight for “liberty” and claim your rights! Go your own way, you only live once, be happy, enthrone yourself and have a seat by the pool.”

“They” are corrupt

But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord. But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption; And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet. These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
(2Pe 2:10-19)

These people sound very serpent like don’t they? They are prescribing separation from God as a path to liberty! These people are “them”, taking orders from Satan himself and doing whatever they can to convince people to throw off restraint, to NOT hear God’s voice to NOT cleave to Him, to NOT worship Him, to NOT abide in Him, to NOT obey Him. Why?

Read these and keep in mind that Satan was the first narcissist:

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
(Rom 8:17)

Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
(Tit 3:6-7)

Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
(Luk 20:13-15)

Since the beginning Satan has only ever had that one tool in his box, “liberty” and death.

  1. Wow, this is really good. I love how you are digging down into the root sin and the fallen nature.
